About the Association
 The boat builders of Newfoundland and Labrador have mastered their craft over many generations. They set the highest standards with boats you can depend on for safety, for productivity and for comfort in the challenging North Atlantic. Aided by the best that modern technology has to offer, they build a wide range of limited-edition and customized boats.
Now our boat builders are bringing their experience to the world. In 2003 the majority of provincial boat builders, with owner-operated facilities, joined with the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CME) to establish the Boat Builders Association of Newfoundland and Labrador.
The members of the Association have long provided working and recreational boats to the local market and exported a small percentage. The people who buy these boats are our greatest advocates because of the service, because of the boats' performance at sea and because of their value as an investment.

Our boat builders strive to integrate new technology into their craft. They have local access to a cluster of world-class Centers for Ocean Excellence:
- Memorial University's Ocean Engineering Research Center;
- Fisheries and Marine Institute;
- Ocean Sciences Center;
- Center of Cold Oceans Resources Engineering; and
- National Research Council of Canada's Institute for Ocean Technology.
That means access to the best minds-and facilities-for vessel research, testing and construction:
- 200-metre towing tank with wave maker;
- World's largest ice tank (76-metres);
- World's most advanced offshore engineering basin with a multi-segmented wave maker;
- Ongoing research for military and other marine vessels and for America's Cup race syndicates.
And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
Through the Association the boat builders are now focusing on developing a strong export market. The Association, in partnership with CME, supports:
- Effective national and provincial advocacy;
- International trade links;
- Practical training on policy and research issues;
- Relevant publications;
- Timely economic forecasts; and
- Expertise on issues facing manufacturers and exporters.
Our Association, like our boats, is built strong to weather the challenging waters of international competition. We are confident that our boats, and the loyalty of our customers, will carry Newfoundland and Labrador boat builders into a new era of growth.
